When Perfectionism Steals Your Joy
"Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed..."
Luke 10:41–42

I berated myself: "Come on. Stop being an idiot. It's not that hard!"

Anger threatened to erupt in flames and lash out at everyone around me. I can't count how many times it's happened — the fiery outburst that comes from chasing perfection.
Perfectionism promises satisfaction, but it only delivers pain, regret, and missed moments that truly matter.

Martha shows us this in Luke 10:38–40. Jesus was in her home, and while Mary sat listening at His feet, Martha busied herself trying to be the perfect hostess. Frustrated, she finally approached Jesus and asked Him to make Mary help her.
But Jesus lovingly pointed her to a better way:

And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
(Luke 10:41–42)
The Son of God was sitting in Martha’s house, yet she could only focus on impressing Him. Her heart, weighed down by worry and expectations, nearly missed the perfect opportunity to sit, listen, and be transformed.
Are you carrying that same burden — trying to prove yourself by being "good enough" or "perfect"?

Lay it down. Stop being so hard on yourself. Choose what Mary chose: to sit at the feet of Jesus and simply receive.
Today, take a few quiet moments. Go to God in prayer. Let Him remind you that you are loved not because you are perfect — but because you are His.
